History
AKOG was founded in 1998 as a single day program. Over time, the structure and length of the organization has changed significantly. As we enter our 17th year, we are now a seven-month long program with events and trips focused around specific themes held every Saturday.
Some examples of theme days to come this year at AKOG include:
-
Nutrition Day
-
Dancing Day
-
Inventor’s Workshop
-
Media Day
-
Scientist’s Labratory
-
Diversability Day
We have four components: the Girl Program, the Junior Mentor, the Mentor Program, and the Alumni Program. Our Girl and Junior Mentor programs are at the center of our organization, targeting children ages 9-12 and 13-15, respectively. Together, these programs provide a safe weekly forum for AKOGers of differing ages to create positive social relationships, assume responsibility, and discuss topics relevent to their lives in an exciting and age-appropriate manner.
These programs are facilitated by our Mentors, a group of approximately 30 of Clark University's undergraduate women, who volunteer their time because they are passionate about children and education. We are proud to maintain a ~3:1 AKOGer:Mentor ratio, allowing true bonds to form though extensive and consistent personal interaction.
