Frequently Asked Questions
01
Who can be a mentor?
Any undergraduate women at Clark University!
02
How do I become a mentor?
Please fill out and submit the Mentor Application, Mentor Contract, Media Release, and CORI form. All of these forms, excluding the CORI form, can be printed out, or you can ask a Steering Committee member for a copy in-person or via email. To fill out the CORI form, please visit Clark's Education Department located on the ground level of the Jonas Clark building.
03
How will I benefit from becoming an AKOG Mentor?
AKOG Mentors benefit personally and professionally. AKOG provides a welcoming community of like-minded undergraduates, a connection to Main South, and an opportunity to volunteer. Our AKOGers value you, and look forward to seeing you every week. You are an essential component of this program, and your participation is rewarding.
Furthermore, AKOG is a great addition to any resume, especially for someone interested in education, women & gender studies, sociology, and/or psychology. Mentors can choose to become involved in projects related to grant writing, curriculum, etc. In addition, AKOG Mentors interested in additional leadership responsibilities can have the chance to become a Steering Committee member.
04
What are the general responsibilities of mentors?
Mentors facilitate activities, ensure safety, form bonds with the AKOGers, and provide input to Steering Committee. We require a positive attitude as well as consistent attendance and timeliness at all AKOG Saturdays, and strongly encourage attendance at Mentor bonding events. Mentors must turn in CORI forms with their applications in order to be cleared to work with our girls. Furthermore, all Mentors are mandated reporters, meaning that we are legally required to report any instances of observed or suspected abuse.
05
What is the time commitment?
Mentors are at Atwood from 10:00AM to approximately 2:30PM every Saturday, excluding University breaks when a majority of students will be off-campus. Attendance is required. Our AKOGers value you, and miss you when you don’t come. Therefore, mentors who miss more than three Saturdays will be asked to leave.
Occasionally, we will have field trips instead of theme days. On these Saturdays, we will typically meet around 8:30AM and be off-campus until approximately 3:30PM. Attendance on field trip days is incredibly important and rewarding, but because the day is extended, we understand if you inform us of extenuating circumstances in advance.
Mentor bonding events will take place primarily on Saturdays in the beginning of the year, while AKOG registration is still taking place. We will also have events on Friday and Saturday evenings throughout the year. Specific dates and times will be determined via doodle polls. Attendance at these events is strongly encouraged.
