Junior Mentor Program

Serving 13-15 year olds, our Junior Mentor program is an intimate program that provides a mature focus for our older AKOGers. Girls from Worcester's middle and high schools meet every Saturday for theme days and field trips that foster positive social connections with their mentors and peers. Their Saturdays are planned in close tandem with the Girls program, but while the themes match, their activities are more complex. Junior Mentors discuss issues that are relevant to their own lives, while taking on a leadership role that reflects and builds on their past experiences as a Girl and their future experiences at school and in the workforce.

The Junior Mentors meet in a designated section of Atwood each week, and work closely with our Junior Mentor Coordinators. Over the course of the day, they participate in activities designed specifically for their age group, and also spendtime acting as leaders within the Girls program and learners within the Mentor program. This program is unique in the sense that it allows Junior Mentors to work closely with both Girls and Mentors on a weekly basis. We recognize that this is a period of transition for the Junior Mentors, and strive to incorporate this understanding into our daily schedules.

Most Saturdays are theme days. On theme days, a particular topic is discussed in depth through a variety of interactive and fun activities. Superhero Day 2013 addressed leadership qualities through a guided discussion, drawings, and a visit from an AKOG alumnus. Anti-Violence Day 2013 addressed being a kind community member through yoga, play performances, and a talk from Professor Sam Diener. Crazy Fun Day 2013 addressed taking time to create joy in your life through a photobooth, frame-making, Gak, and more! Every week is different.

In addition, we typically go on two field trips per year. In the past, we have traveled to the Rock Gym, Boston Aquarium, Boston Museum of Science, and Roller Kingdom. These trips are an exciting chance to go off-campus and explore somewhere new together!

AKOG will always be free-of-cost. We provide a nutritious lunch every week, though we cannot currently provide transportation options.
